Experiential Education in Fire Science, Safety, & Prevention

With a commitment to environmental awareness and advocacy, Rise Expeditions is proud to offer a 3-day Fire Ecology Program in Malibu Creek. By exploring fire from many angles – the lived experiences of first responders, introduction to cutting edge research about fire management, the science of fire, and using fire for cooking, warmth, and entertainment – the program aims to make a foundational impact on students’ lives. Additionally, students will share their experiences with their families and increase community understanding and empowerment about how to be fire safe both in city and fire-prone areas.

Highlights

Learn fire literacy such as mechanics, prevention, and safety

Integrate science curriculum including energy, friction, combustion, and ecosystems

Night hikes to learn astronomy; day hikes to view burn zones

Evening programs by fire including cooking, campfires, movies, and presentations

Wildfire program with local Fire Departments and scientists

What to Expect

The program will explore the chaparral canyons in the Malibu Creek SP area (or other fire-prone locations) where the Woolsey Fire burned fast and hot during the November 2018 Santa Ana winds. In this examination of place, students will have the opportunity to tie their school’s curricular intentions for life and physical sciences including topics such as heat as energy, types of friction, combustion, adaptations, and life cycles of plants and animals who live in fire-prone areas, and general characteristics of and relationships between chaparral and riparian biomes.

In addition to working with our educational leaders and the local Fire Department Station, students will connect with local tribes to learn about their relationships with the land and with fire, both historically and presently.
